Extreme House Makeover – HomeTask Cares Edition

Apr 15 2009
Burien, WA - Evie Combs of Burien, WA, a single mother of two, was confronted with a situation in which three young children were in need of a nurturing home. While there was some uncertainty about the financial means to facilitate this, Evie and her two daughters opened up their home without a second thought. “It was something that needed to be done, and we wanted them here,” said Evie as she recalled the day the she added three new members to her family. “Zach and Olivia, the twins, were seven and Haylee was four when they moved in with me.” For the first 4 years, all 6 members of the family shared the 3 bedroom home. Today, Evie’s older daughters have grown and since moved out on their own.

Scott Steepleton, Yellow VAN Handyman Franchise Partner, became acquainted with Evie and her story. Initially, Scott agreed to do some repair work for Evie. However, Scott began to realize that in order to accommodate five active children; Evie’s home was in need of repairs that extended beyond her ability to fully compensate him. In an effort to give back to a person who had given so much, Scott offered to give the gift of his time in the form of renovating Evie’s home without charging for labor. Having done work with the HomeTask Cares Foundation in the past, Scott nominated Evie for a Cares Project.

In response to this need, the HomeTask Cares Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity, is preparing to join Scott in helping Evie on April 18th and 19th. Yellow VAN Handyman, a HomeTask Brand of Service, in support of its Franchise Partner Scott Steepleton, will be lending a helping hand by uniting additional franchise partners who will also donate labor hours toward the completion of the renovations of Evie’s home. At this time, Yellow VAN Handyman has secured commitments from franchise partners from all over the Puget Sound, as well as B.C., Canada.

The home improvements include: a 200 sq ft addition for a dining room and entry room, a completely renovated kitchen and a second bathroom. Evie and the kids have also rolled up their shirt sleeves making improvements in the yard to provide an outdoor sanctuary for this summer. These improvements will provide opportunities for the family to dine together, play together, and maximize their limited living space. Evie has contributed in a number of ways including the procurement of the materials necessary to complete these projects.

With plans to complete the kitchen and dining room renovations over the weekend of April 18th and 19th, Miranda Figgins, director of the HomeTask Cares Foundation, is hard at work coordinating the efforts of multiple parties.
